The Wrangler Atmospheric Diving Suit (ADS), crafted by International Submarine Engineering Ltd in Canada in 1982, represents a significant advancement in individual underwater exploration and work capabilities. Designed as a one-man diving suit, the Wrangler ADS allows for deep-sea activities including commercial operations, salvage missions, research, and inspection tasks, facilitating direct human interaction with the underwater environment in conditions that are otherwise inaccessible.

Constructed from glass-reinforced polyester resin with crash protection featuring two free-flooding polycarbonate domes and skids made from Schedule 80 steel pipe, the Wrangler ADS showcases robust design choices aimed at maximizing durability and operational safety. Its fairings are made of fiberglass, enhancing the suit’s hydrodynamics, while visibility is ensured through two acrylic domes, allowing the operator extensive visual access to the surroundings.

The ADS is equipped with an advanced manipulator arm, offering four to seven functions depending on the configuration, which significantly extends its utility for various underwater tasks. The ballast system, vital for controlling buoyancy and stability, includes air, seawater, and lead components, carefully balanced to provide precise maneuverability. The suit’s propulsion is powered by thrusters, originally fitted with four 2hp units for comprehensive movement control in all directions.

Notably, the Wrangler ADS incorporates a life support system that adheres to American Bureau of Shipping regulations, including carbon dioxide scrubbers and oxygen cylinders, ensuring the operator’s safety during missions. It’s designed to operate either tethered to the surface power or autonomously with 120vdc batteries, catering to a wide range of mission requirements.

With optional equipment such as additional manipulators, sonar, tracking and navigation tools, and video recording capabilities, the Wrangler ADS can be customized to suit specific operational needs. Training for maintenance and piloting is available, emphasizing the adaptability of the course to fit the new operator’s requirements, ensuring that crews are fully prepared to leverage the ADS’s capabilities effectively.

In summary, the Wrangler ADS stands as a testament to human ingenuity in the quest to explore and work in the ocean’s depths. Its design, equipped with state-of-the-art technology and built with high-quality materials, makes it a formidable tool for a variety of underwater operations, providing a safe, efficient, and direct method for humans to interact with the undersea world.
